This Lefton "Violet Chintz" Ashtray set complete with caddy was produced by Lefton China in the early to mid-1950's. Full-skirted dresses, hats, and gloves were appropriate attire as the ladies gathered for their weekly bridge game, and no hostess would be without a dainty set of ashtrays for the convenience of her smoking friends.
This pattern is known as "Violet Chintz." Featuring an all over pattern of delicate purple violets with bright green leaves and paler green tendrils, each ashtray and the holder are framed with gold trim around the edge. Each cigarette rest is also gilded. Each porcelain ashtray measures 2-5/8 inches square, and the cigarette rests bring that measurement up to 3-1/4 inches. The square holder is 3-inches across, with sides that dip down to accommodate the tabs for the cigarette rests. The total height is 1-3/4 inches.
The mark is only on the ashtray caddy. It is the blue crown mark which dates from 1949 to 1955 and reads "Lefton China Hand Painted Reg. U.S. Pat Off." surrounding the crown. "666V" is stamped in black. The red with gold foil label reads "Lefton's Reg US Pat Off Exclusives Japan."
There is some minor wear on the gold rests on the ashtrays, and the remnant of a price tag is still on the bottom. There are no other condition issues.
