Bring a bit of the British Isles into your home with this Scotsman of the Campbell Clan. This Plichta London England Ashtray features an elegant Highlander dressed from his scarf and kilt to his knee hose in the emerald green of the Campbell tartan, with a black overcoat on his shoulders, and his bonnet in his hand. The art work is a copy of a painting originally done by R.R.McIan in the mid-1800's. McIan was best known for his beautiful depictions of Scottish Highlanders and his illustrations in "The Clans of the Scottish Highlands" published in 1845.
This cream-colored pottery ashtray measures 4 3/4 inches wide x 5 3/4 inches long. The backstamp reads (in black block Letters) "PLICHTA, LONDON, ENGLAND." Plichta was a wholesaler between the 1930's and 1950's, not a potter. He was a best customer of Bovey Pottery, formerly Wemyss, and he also purchased from Elton Pottery .
This ashtray is in fair condition. It is heavily crazed, with some discoloration near the Highlander's right shoulder, and there is some yellowing of the glaze. The back edge is also slightly rough with tiny nicks along the edge, especially near the cigarette rests. These are not seen from the front. Please see the photos. These imperfections are reflected in the price.
