Here is a pretty Imari-Style Red, Cobalt Blue, Gold Teacup and Saucer from Colclough Bone China, England. Numbered #4845, the intricate design on this cup and saucer has a band around the rim with gold-outlined vignettes of orange-red and yellow flowers with greenery, alternating with deep cobalt blue panels with a gold filigree overlay. The band is intersected with a nearly square panel containing a large orange-red flower. The one-inch wide band is repeated inside of the cup and around the rim of the saucer. Gold embellishments define the bands, each panel, the handle, foot, and cup ring.
The Bone China cup is 2-1/2 inches tall on a 1-5/8 inch diameter foot. It is 3-3/8 inches in diameter with another inch for the handle. The matching saucer is 5-5/8 inches in diameter and 1-inch deep.
Made by Colclough China, Ltd, between 1939 and 1954, it is stamped with the circle mark that reads "Colclough China, Made in Longton England, Genuine Bone China." The pattern number 4845 is on the saucer along the outside of the circle. There are also a few stray artist's marks in green, red, and gold.
There is wear on the gold, particularly along the rims and on the cup well of the saucer, consistent with use. There is significant evidence of hand painting, with cobalt, yellow, and gold outside the lines, and there is a 3/4-inch glaze slip on the back of the saucer. There is also significant wear on the foot of the cup, along with some slight discoloration. The beautiful color combination makes it easy to accept, and even embrace, these flaws.
