Another lavish beauty by Royal Chelsea is this Golden Rose 3983A Bone China Teacup and saucer set. Both the cup and saucer are extensively adorned with realistic large deep pink and apricot yellow roses backed by soft green leaves. Dainty rosebuds in matching colors accent each floral spray. The flowers, in alternating sizes, decorate the inside and outside of the teacup. The real eye-catcher on this set is the wide brushed gold trim around the scalloped rim of the saucer, and on both the inside and outside rim of the cup. The high handle is gilded and there is a ring of gold around the foot of the cup.
The teacup measures 2-1/4 inches tall and 3-3/4 inches in diameter across the fluted rim, with another inch for the high handle. It stands on a 1-3/4 inch foot. The matching saucer is 5-1/2 inches in diameter.
Both pieces are stamped with the well-known New Chelsea Anchor mark followed by the trade name “Royal Chelsea” in script, and the words “English Bone China, Made in England.” The pattern name “Golden Rose” arches above the anchor. This Royal Chelsea backstamp was used by the New Chelsea Company from 1943 to 1951. The pattern number, 3983A, is handwritten in gold on the saucer.
The rim of the cup has about an inch-long area that feels slightly rough to the touch, but the gold is intact. In fact, any gold loss is truly negligible, and there are no chips or cracks. This is a gorgeous display set!
