Classic movie fans will fall in love with this Bette Davis Look-Alike Lady in a Brown Hood Head Vase! This pretty young lady’s Bette Davis-like face is framed by her wide and cozy wind-blown hood. Painted in medium brown, the hood covers her head and shoulders and is folded back to reveal the creamy underside decorated with incised, textured flowers. A pair of embossed blossoms at her lapel is painted in blue. She has bright red lips in a mysterious smile, and her closed eyes have heavy applied black eyelashes. Her pencil-thin eyebrows accent her soft brown hair that peeks out from under her head-covering to curl over her forehead and sweep out to the right by her chin. Unlike many head vases, this one has a flat back with a white glossy finish as though it may have been intended as a wall pocket, but there is no hole for hanging.
She is 5-3/4 inches tall by 5-1/2 inches across her wide wind-blown hood. She measures 3-inches front to back, and 5-inches high at the back rim. The opening is about 2-1/2 inches in diameter, and the base is 3-3/4 inches by 3-inches.
Made in Japan for import by New York Merchandise Co. Inc. circa the 1950s to 1960s, the original foil label in silver on black is intact and reads “Wales” above a crown followed by “Reg. U.S. Pat. Off. Made in Japan.”
There are some dirt smudges that will require a careful cleaning, and the matte painting, clearly done by hand, has a charming folk art quality to it, being uneven and imprecise. There are no chips or cracks.
