Offered for your consideration is this romantic set of three “Spode’s Regal” number 25404 Bouillon Cups and Saucers by Spode, Staffordshire, England. The transferware design is an Asian-inspired motif of large poppy-like flowers and foliage in shades of blues, greens, deep pinks, and even a touch of golden-yellow. The Asian floral transfer design wraps around the outside of each cup and is echoed in the center of each saucer, with a smaller design in the bottom of each cup. More blossoms circle the smooth rims of the saucers and both the inside and outside of each cup. The flowers on the rim are on a background of blue geometric swirls and pointy drapes. Every edge and the handles of the cups are trimmed in gold.

The bouillon cups each measure 3-3/8 inches in diameter, 5-inches with the handles, and 2-inches tall. The matching saucer measures 5-3/8 inches in diameter.

Made by Spode, Copeland circa the early 1900s, when such cups for serving clear broth or bouillon were considered a necessary item for a complete table service, the back stamp reads “Spode’s Regal” arched over “Copeland England” in blue. Some also have a blue 19. The saucers also have an incised circle mark directly under the blue stamped mark. It is difficult to impossible to read but could be the “Copeland & Garrett Late Spode” mark that was used as early as 1833. Each piece also has the pattern number “25404” handwritten in red, as well as additional red numerals.

There are stray bits of color here and there from the transfer work, and all pieces have non-discolored crazing, but it is not readily noticeable. There is minor expected wear to the gold trim, and also some minor wear to the design in places, consistent with age. There may be an extra porcelain bump here and there. Each saucer has a very small, old, edge nick on the back. These are less than an eighth of an inch long and barely noticeable.

There are actually four bouillon cups, but the fourth saucer has a significant edge chip on the front which you can see in the last photo. This extra set will be included with your purchase of the set of three.
