Elegant Fostoria Glass from the Depression Era is becoming increasingly scarce, and this set of four green juice tumblers with the Spartan Etch is certainly a lucky find! Each of these 5-ounce juice tumblers features a bell-shaped, paneled optic, green glass bowl on a clear, circular foot. An additional ring of glass joins the clear foot to the bowl. This is Fostoria’s Blank #5000, and the addition of Etch #80, the pattern named Spartan, makes this set especially beautiful. The Spartan Etch is a beautiful needle-etched design of three narrow lines forming a band of mirror image open loops and swirls around the bowl of the goblet.
Fostoria produced this color combination with this etching from 1927 to 1940. There is no mark.
Each 5-ounce footed tumbler is 4-1/2 inches tall and 2-3/4 inches diameter at the rim and stands on a 2-1/4 inch foot.
There is a small dark inclusion in one of the tumblers, and there is a 1/2 inch vertical scratch that tends to blend into the paneled optic above the design on another. There are no chips or cracks in any.
When pinged, the glass rings like a delicate chime, and they have a lovely glow under black light.
