Based on a series of books of the same name, and created in close cooperation with the author, Jill Barklem, this Royal Doulton Bone China Cup and Saucer from the Brambly Hedge Collection represents Winter. This charming and beautifully detailed Winter cup and saucer set features Mr. and Mrs. Apple enjoying pie by the warm fireplace. The two mice are depicted in pastels on the front of the cup, with Mrs. Apple dressed in her blue striped dress and apron as she serves up the delicious,(one assumes berry,) pie, which is featured within the Winter triangle at the top of the saucer. Mr. Apple reclines in the over-stuffed pink easy chair. The back of the cup shows the four mouse children, dressed in sleepwear, gazing out the window at the gently falling snow. A 3/4 to 1-inch wide border of snow-laden bramble berries and brown leaves among the gently falling snow on a pastel blue ground, circles the saucer and the top back of the cup. An adorable pipe-smoking snow-mouse in a light red scarf and bramble branch tail decorates the inside of the cup and the cup well of the saucer. The foot and handle of the cup are tinted a soft pastel blue. The rims of both are scalloped and slightly fluted, with an embossed scroll on the edge of the saucer. The top of the border is outlined with dips and curls.
The teacup measures 3-inches tall and 3-1/2 inches in diameter across the rim, with another inch for the handle. The teacup stands on a 2-inch diameter foot. The matching saucer is 5-1/2 inches in diameter.
There is a pinhead-sized wear mark on the rim, as though the cup was stored upside down for a time. Other than minor shelf wear on the underside of the foot, there are no other condition issues.
The Brambly Hedge Series issued by Royal Doulton is dated 1983 and was discontinued in 2006. Both pieces are stamped with the familiar Royal Doulton lion and crown over circle backstamp. The circle surrounds the words “Royal Doulton England,” with “Made in England Bone China” surrounding the outside of the circle. The back of the saucer has a matching brambly floral wreath with the backstamp at the top, enclosing the words, “Royal Doulton, Winter, a Series of Four Seasons Cups and Saucers from the Brambly Hedge Gift Collection.” “©Jill Barklem 1983” is topped with an image of a bit of brambly hedge in a basket. The matching cup backstamp is simpler with only “Royal Doulton, Winter, ©Jill Barklem 1983” beneath the familiar logo.
