Offered here is the beautiful Cairo Gold on White Teacup and Saucer by Coalport Bone China. This outstanding scalloped cup and saucer set features a pair of exotic peacock-like birds in the tangled branches of a tree. The all-over pattern on the saucer depicts one of the birds, likely the male, standing upright on a branch, while the second bird bobs down and reaches her outstretched neck to catch a passing butterfly. The tree branches are dotted with flowers and fruit, and several flying insects dart among the branches. Just when you think you have spotted them all, whoops! There’s another! The inside of the teacup features the same scene with only the regal upright bird and a few of the insects among the tree branches. The handle and the foot of the cup are gilded, and the scalloped rims of both pieces are also trimmed in gold, with another narrow band of gold around the outside of the cup.
This stunning teacup measures 2-1/4 inches tall and 4-inches in diameter at the scalloped rim. It stands on a 2-1/8 inch diameter foot. The matching saucer is 5-3/4 inches in diameter.
Both pieces are stamped in gold with the Coalport crown with the words "Coalport bone China, Made in England 1750." This mark was used by Coalport from around 1940 to 1960. The cup also has the pattern number 78101 with an artist’s mark.
As is to be expected, there is a patina on the gold of the handle and on the foot. Other than that, there is very little wear on the gold and no other condition issues. The cup pings beautifully.
