This striking black Teacup and Saucer hand painted with Bright Poppies is numbered B4156 by Aynsley Bone China. This cup and saucer is finished in glossy, solid black, the perfect color to make the hand painted bright flowers pop! Large poppies in vivid red-orange, pink, yellow, and blue grow up one side of the saucer on willowy stems of with green leaves. The opposite side of the saucer is decorated with a blue and pink bachelor-button with slender green leaves. Bits of the floral design spill over into the white, center cup ring. The cup has the same bright poppies on the front as though they are growing from the top, with the bachelor button on the back. Both the tapered cup and the matching saucer have smooth rims trimmed with gold. The center cup ring is also outlined in gold, as are the foot and the handle of the cup. There is a narrow band of gold around the inside top of the cup. From the wonderful black to the tapered cup shape and smooth rims, this is a great Art Deco piece for your collection!
The teacup stands 2-5/8 inches tall and 3-1/8 inches in diameter at the rim, tapering to a 1-7/8 inch shallow foot. The matching saucer measures 5-1/4 inches in diameter.
The back stamp is the green crown above the Aynsley Banner, followed by "England." The words "Bone China" flank the crown. The pattern number B4156/L is hand painted on the cup. This mark was used between 1934 and 1939, though the style of the set suggests an earlier vintage.
There is a bit of black on the gold rim of the saucer that appears to have been done in the finishing process. With very little, if any, wear on the gold, there are no condition issues.
