Based on a series of books of the same name, and created in close cooperation with the author, Jill Barklem, this Royal Doulton Bone China Cup and Saucer from the Brambly Hedge Collection represents "Summer." The charming and beautifully detailed cup and saucer set celebrates the engagement of the characters Poppy Eyebright and Mr. Dusty Dogwood. The two mice are depicted in pastels on the front of the cup dressed in delightful clothing in front of her cottage door in the midst of a profusion of vines and blooms. The back of the cup shows yet another mouse hard at work mixing up a delicious treat, which appears to be shown completed within the Summer title triangle at the top of the saucer. A 3/4 to 1-inch wide border of berries, blossoms, and leaves, complete with bees on a pastel green ground, circles the saucer and the top back of the cup. A matching bouquet tied with a bow decorates the inside of the cup and the cup well of the saucer. The foot and handle of the cup are also tinted a soft pastel green. The rims of both are scalloped and slightly fluted, with an embossed scroll on the edge of the saucer. The top of the border is outlined with dips and curls.
The illustration may appear to be slightly faded, but I believe that is by design in the soft pastels rather than wear. There are no condition issues.
The teacup measures 3-inches tall and 3-1/2 inches in diameter across the rim, with another inch for the handle and stands on a 2-inch diameter foot. The matching saucer is 5-1/2 inches in diameter.
The Brambly Hedge Series issued by Royal Doulton is dated 1983 and was discontinued in 2006. Both pieces are stamped with the familiar Royal Doulton lion and crown over circle backstamp. The circle encloses the words “Royal Doulton England,” with “Made in England Bone China” surrounding the outside of the circle. The back of the saucer has a matching brambly floral wreath with the backstamp at the top, enclosing the words, “Royal Doulton, Summer, a Series of Four Seasons Cups and Saucers from the Brambly Hedge Gift Collection.” “©Jill Barklem 1983” is topped with an image of a bit of brambly hedge in a basket. The matching cup backstamp is simpler with only “Royal Doulton, Summer, ©Jill Barklem 1983” beneath the familiar logo.
