An irresistible blue handled Shelley Bone China Scenic Teacup and Saucer decorated with the Old Mill Pattern 13669. The scenic decoration on the front of the teacup shows the Old Mill Building with a double roof in rustic brown and the rest of the building obscured by trees and undergrowth. The pastel blue river runs peacefully alongside the mill with appropriate vegetation along the shore in browns, yellow, and greens. The surrounding trees have abundant leaves in greens with touches of yellow, and a few birds can be seen in flight in the background. The soothing scene wraps around the front of the cup fading into a light purple mountain in the distance. The scene is echoed on the back of the cup and on the saucer absent the mill but with the addition of a couple of white swans. Leaving no detail behind, the inside rim of the cup echoes the mountain and river portion of the scene, and the saucer is finished with a large branch of the trees stretching across the right side. The handle of this New Cambridge shaped teacup is painted a sky blue, slightly more turquoise than the river, and the scalloped rims of both pieces are trimmed in gold.
The corset-shaped cup is 2-5/8 inches tall, and 3-3/8 inch diameter across the top (with another inch for the handle,) and tapering down to a 1-3/4 inch flat foot. The matching saucer is 5-5/8 inches in diameter.
It is stamped in green underglaze with the Shelley shield and reads "Fine Bone China" above the script "Shelley" in shield, followed by "England.” The pattern name “Old Mill” follows in brown script with a flourish, then 13669. This mark was used by Shelley from 1945 to 1966. There are various artist’s marks on each piece.
Faint utensil use marks are scattered on each piece, but barely visible. Any wear on the gold is truly minimal. Other than expected shelf wear on the underside of the foot, there are no other condition issues.
