This sweet begging Dachshund dog teapot is marked Erphila U.S. Zone Germany. This adorable dachshund-shaped teapot is appropriately colored in a high-gloss glaze that ranges from chocolate brown to near-black at the top of the head and paws. The belly is cream-colored, and the collar around the neck is a red-brown. The opening for the teapot is at the collar and the head forms the cover. His dark eyes in his beseeching expression and raised paws seem to sweetly beg for a morsel.
The bottom is marked with an incised pattern number, 6703B, and stamped with “Made in U.S. Zone Germany,” though the “U.S.” is smeared and unreadable. It is also stamped with the circular Ebeling & Reuss of Philadelphia, “ER Erphila Germany” mark. There is also an incised W. This teapot was made by the Cortendorf Factory in Germany circa 1946 to 1949. Cortendorf made animal shaped teapots for the American Importing company of Ebeling and Reuss of Philadelphia.
This teapot measures 8-1/2 inches tall to the top of the head, 6-inches to the neck opening. It is approximately 3-3/4 inches in diameter at the base and approximately 7-inches across the raised paws that form the spout to the tail that forms the handle.
There is non-discolored crazing and shelf wear, but no chips or cracks to this adorable pup.
