Ripe red raspberries are hand painted in fine detail on this scalloped plate from Haviland France. The beautiful shadings of green in the leaves and red in the sun-kissed berries, teamed with the soft pastel blue and yellow background, portray the warm summer light in detail you can almost feel. A few white blossoms peek through the leaves, and the scalloped rim is delicately edged in gold.
This Haviland hand-painted Red Raspberries plate is artist signed on the front "C.V. Molen." Haviland exported a great deal of white ware for painting at various decorating studios, but I have been unable to find any information on this talented artist.
This 8-1/2 inch plate is stamped with the green underglaze arched "Haviland" over "France" mark which dates this plate to the years this mark was used, 1893-1930, and the style of the design and signature "C.V. Molen" on the front are representative of the early 1900s.
The plate has some wear on the gold consistent with age, and a small chip on the back on the ring of the foot that does not effect stability.
