This Tiny Character Jug from Royal Doulton depicts 'Arriet' - One of the Original Twelve Tinies. In a fine representation of a cockney woman who sold fruits and vegetables on the street, 'Arriet, 'Arry's wife, wears a dark green bonnet over her light brown hair which is pulled back in a bun. She wears a brown coat with a tan scarf and a wry expression on her face. 'Arriet, number D6256, was designed by Harry Fenton and was produced between 1947 and 1960. These Tiny Character Jugs were difficult and expensive to produce because of their small size. Painting was done by the artist balancing the tiny jug on the end of his little finger. Production ceased during the War and resumed in 1947 until the Tinies were discontinued in 1960.
Sometimes called Toby mugs, this tiny, porcelain character jug measures 1-inch in diameter (add 1/4 inch for the handle) and 1-3/8 inches tall. The backstamp bears the circular "Royal Doulton Made In England" around a four-lobed square.
