This Tiny Character Jug from Royal Doulton characterizes The Cardinal based on the role of the Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in Shakespeare's Henry VIII. One of the Original Twelve Tinies, wearing the traditional red robes and peaked hat, The Cardinal was designed by Charles Noke, one of Royal Doulton's top designers, for the 1947 Post-War release of the second six Tiny Character Jugs.
Tiny Character Jugs were difficult and expensive to produce because of their small size. Painting was done by the artist balancing the tiny jug on the end of his little finger. Production ceased during the War and resumed in 1947 until the Tinies were discontinued in 1960.
Sometimes called Toby mugs, this tiny, porcelain character jug measures just 1-3/8 inches at the widest diameter at the top and 1-1/4 inches tall.
It bears the circular backstamp that reads "Royal Doulton Made In England" around a four-lobed square. The Cardinal was mold number D6258, though it isn't included in the mark. There is no damage.
