This striking set of six Mid-Century Black and Gold Double Old Fashioned Tumblers was made in 1965 by Libbey Glass as a promotion to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of Prudential Insurance. Featuring the familiar Prudential Rock of Gibraltar logo, the pattern, in luxurious 22-Karat gold on black, features a trio of gold ringed circular medallions. The center medallion is of the famous Prudential Rock symbol, The Rock of Gibraltar. The two flanking medallions feature an intricate floral design, reminiscent of a Rose Window. Each medallion tops a standard with three pairs of scrolling, feathered acanthus leaves. The top and bottom of the triple panel is finished with a narrow geometric gold border. This intricate and striking design is repeated on the opposite side of each tumbler.
Each double old-fashioned, or double rocks glass, measures 4-3/8 inches tall and 3-1/2 inches in diameter at the rim, tapering to 2-3/4 inches at the base.
Made in 1965 as a promotion for Prudential's 90th Anniversary, the Libbey script "L" is embossed on the bottom of each.
There are a half dozen small spots of wear that show through to clear, but these spots blend with other intentional clear spots in the design, such as in the center of the flowers. They are not highly noticeable. Looking at the inside of the glass in the photos, you can see these intentional clear places. There is an occasional tiny bubble in the glass that occurs in the manufacturing. There are no chips or cracks. (The red tint in the photos is reflection.)
This set will be a stunning addition to your Hollywood Regency bar ware collection!
As in all vintage glassware, these should only be washed by hand to protect the delicate design.
