This Cup of Knowledge Bone China Teacup and Saucer by Aynsley will be an intriguing and unusual addition to your collection! With a complete deck of 52 red and black playing cards and even a Joker in the bottom depicted on the interior of this teacup, this design was most certainly popular with the Fortune Telling Tea Rooms that were prevalent in the late-1920s and 1930s. Though fortune-telling was quite the craze of the time, it was illegal to charge money for it, and the tea rooms were often raided!
The interior rim of the teacup reads “The Cup of Knowledge” in black letters with a flourish between each of the words. Bunches of fully-opened enameled flowers in bright colors of pink, yellow, and blue adorn both the outside of the teacup and the saucer. Accented with appropriate leaves, the flowers seem to grow carelessly in large arrangements on the front of the cup and one side of the saucer, with smaller groups of two on the back of the teacup, and on the opposite side of the saucer. Both the cup and the matching saucer are scalloped and trimmed with gold, as are the foot and the handle.
The cup is 2-inches tall, 2-1/4 at the top of the handle, and 3-3/4 inches in diameter across the top with another inch for the handle. It stands on a 1-3/4 inch diameter foot. The matching saucer is 5-1/2 inches in diameter.
The back stamp is the signature Green Crown above the Aynsley Banner, followed by "England." The words "Bone China" flank the crown. The registration number “RdNo702537” indicating a registration date of 1923 is stamped in black on the teacup.
There is a bit of extra color in places, especially just under the gold rim and a pinpoint-sized dip under the gold on the scalloped rim of the saucer. There is also some sticker residue on the saucer that may show in the photos, but will be removed before shipping. There are no chips, cracks, or crazing to this unusual set!
What fun to surprise your guests with this teacup at your next tea party!
