This stunning antique Limoges flowered plate, made by Mavaleix and decorated with White Poppies by Coronet is signed by the artist, Roux. Snow-white poppies with paper-thin petals so lifelike you can almost feel their tissue-like delicateness are painted on the plate in the Naturalistic style of the era. The bell-shaped flowers show a fiery burst of red-orange stamens and bend on delicate green stalks to cover the lower 2/3 of the plate. On a dark, shading to light, green ground, a trio of tight red buds arch among the blooms. The 1/4 to 1/2-inch embossed, scrolling and scalloped rococo edge is layered with gold. Truly a work of art on porcelain, the plate is signed by the artist, “Roux” on the lower right.
This beautiful plate measures 8-3/4 inches in diameter with a depth of almost an inch.
Made in Limoges, France circa 1908 to 1920, the open crown Coronet mark used by George Borgfeldt is over the glaze in a light green. This mark has the word Limoges arched above the crown and "Coronet, France" below. It also bears the underglaze ”France M de M Limoges" mark used by Mavaleix prior to 1920. This mark is slightly blurred but still readable.
As you might expect on a hundred-year-old piece, there is some wear to the heavily gilded rim, as well as a few minor surface scratches that do not mar the design. There are no chips, cracks, or crazing to this exquisite plate.
