An unusual find from Limoges, France, I'm excited to offer this Old Abbey Curled Horn-shaped Lady's Spittoon or Cuspidor. Signed by the artist, Manet, this little beauty is exquisitely hand painted in the Naturalistic style of the era with large pink rose blossoms and buds accented with soft green leaves. Painted both inside and outside the spittoon, the buds are just showing deep pink at the tips, while the full-blown blossoms are in variegated shades ranging from the same deep pink to pale blush. The leaves vary from the palest pastel green to a vivid deep green. The ruffled rim is gilded, finishing in a sizable thumb rest completely covered in gold. The shape is a perfect fit for a ladies’ hand.
Used for a lady's toilette as a spit cup, perhaps when brushing her teeth, this remarkable piece measures 8-3/4 inches long, 5-inches at its widest, and approximately 2-inches deep.
Made by Latrille Freres, Limoges, France, it is stamped with the green oval "Limoges France" with a star whiteware mark used by Latrille Freres from 1899-1913. It also bears the "Old Abbey" banner with the word "Limoges" suspended beneath it. This is a decorating mark used by the same company, circa 1908-1913, indicating this extraordinary piece was factory-decorated. It was proudly signed on the front by the artist “Manet” as a finishing touch of quality.
There is a narrow row of dark dots on the inside, and there is an old 1/16-inch nick on the underside of the ruffled gold rim. It shows as a dark spot on the lower edge in the photo of the backside of the piece. There are no other chips or cracks. Other than expected minor wear on the gold rim consistent with age, there are no other condition issues.
