This stunning two handled Arts and Crafts bowl is expertly hand painted with Oak Leaves and Acorns in the Naturalistic Style and signed "Elsa W. Schmidt." A wide gold band of acorns and oak leaves in realistic shades of greens and browns encircles the top half of the bowl. The bottom half of flows from a golden tan downward to a deep brown. The interior of the bowl is a peach lustre, and the two open loop handles arch up and curve over the rim. The handles are shaped and embossed with deep brown leaves where they attach to the bowl, and are a lighter brown at the top.

This quality Arts & Crafts bowl measures 6-inches in diameter, 6-3/4 across the handles, and 2-1/2 inches tall, 3-3/4 inches at the top of the handles.

There is an incised 68 (or 89 upside down.) The block letter signature "Elsa W. Schmidt," indicates the bowl was painted in the years shortly after 1910. A 1913 Arts Crafts Exhibition Catalogue, The Art Institute of Chicago, lists "SCHMIDT, ELSA W .-Blue Island, Ill. Designer, maker, exhibitor." Alan Reed's "Collector's Encyclopedia of Pickard China" shows this blank was used at a minimum by both Brauer and Stouffer Decorating Studios.

The bowl has appropriate minor wear and no damage, though it does need some cleaning, especially around the handles.
