Offered here is an exceptional & recherché ornamental antiquity.
An early 1800's regal French opaline glass ETUI, in the form of a
hand painted enameled gilt suspended egg, supported by a
wreathed arbor whose posts split into three legs - attached to a
square beveled marble base. Atop the diaphanous eggshell is a
floriate charm; gild work striates the hinge and rim where the egg
opens to reveal its interior secrets.

Historically ETUI's were used to house perfume or sewing provisions.
Inside you will find four sewing implements,a scissor, awl, magnify
glass and thimble sitting on top a cushion. On the exterior, raised hand
painted scenes once garnished the ovular surface, remnants allude
to a once fabulous Asian village scene, several figures posing in front
of a pagoda - foliage encircling its delicate curvature. Fruit bearing
leafy climbers embrace the arboreal egg support - A lavish Louis Phillipe
Napoleonic embellished and operative ETUI.

AGE: 19th century
SIZE: EGG Approx. 6.5" x 3" x 9"
MATERIAL : BASE is MARBLE, Egg Glass & Gilt
CONDITION: Very Good; The structure stands strong, with good gilt finish but
the ornamental painted scene upon the egg is very worn and hard to discern.
Such a rare item, that the condition is to be expected!
