This is an exceptional example of mid-century modern religious art. It is a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary enveloping the Christ Child. Each angle of the piece gives the viewer a different impression. From the from the front, Our Lady seems to have her head bowed and her arms wrapped wide and hands coming together in prayer in the classic style Madonna image. The shape of her arms forms a huge heart, indicating Our Lord, although the Child is not actually delineated. From the reverse, however, it is clear that the Mother is hugging her Beloved Child close. Although there is very little detailing, the piece is alive with motion and emotion. Wonderful.
