French Asparagus Service Pitcher in Majolica

I don't know what it is about the French and asparagus, but they really love this vegetable.
And as with a number of other foods, they make a ritual of serving it when it appears all over France in the early spring. Over and over one sees asparagus-themed plates, servers and occasionally this sort of pitcher.

This pitcher with its asparagus decor is an emblematic example of French Majolica of the turn of the century of the type, but it is rare to find this particular pitcher in such excellent condition.

This pattern appears in, 'Artichauts et Asperge in Barbotine' by Maryse Bottero and is described on pages 93 of that book with a photo in another glaze colour-way. It also appears on the dust jacket of the book. The maker of this highly collectible pitcher is is the well-known French manufacturer, Onnaing who at this time specialized in asparagus-themed Majolica ('Barbotine' is the French term).

This fine piece measures approx. 8 1/2 " inches long, 7 1/2 " inches wide from the lip to the crook in the handle.

The antique condition of this piece is excellent, the colors bright and not faded or discolored as we sometimes see. There are no chips or cracks and just one tiny 'faute de cuisson' or firing flaw barely visible at the top edge. There is some light crazing of the glaze as is expected with these pieces of old Majolica but all in all, this pitcher is in superb antique condition.

A very lovely 'old-fashioned' piece of Majolica / Barbotine... 'So French'...and So Rare!
