Men, by far, are the minority, when it comes to cameo carvings. This is a nice example of a Roman statesman, possibly, hand-carved in shell cameo. He has finely-carved, detailed wavy hair and a wreath around his head, very masterfully carved features and a draped toga. This brooch has the old "c-style" clasp on back, and I feel the clasp, pin and hinge are all "original". The piece is framed in an ornate "baroque-style" brass bezel; the piece dates from the 1850's. It is an oval 43 MM x 33 MM and is neither chipped nor cracked.
