American Civil War era Folk Art memorial watercolor painting
“The Union Forever”, undated, probably 1860s
watercolor on card stock applied to paper backing, 4 ½ in. x 5 ¾ in.
(framed dimensions: 10 in. x 11 3/8 in.)
Unsigned

A poignant survivor of our nation’s Civil War era, this somewhat naive watercolor depicts the national eagle in profile with outspread wings, its talons clasping a rod with patriotic red, white and blue bunting, with a ribbon banner displaying the words “THE UNION FOREVER”, surmounting a memorial silhouette of a bearded male. The painting is framed in a mid-19th century, faux rosewood grain-painted bevel frame, underneath a piece of old glass with imperfections.

The silhouetted figure may represent the martyred President Lincoln or a family member who has fallen in service to the Union cause. Surely the painting was hung with pride in a home that supported the North and the preservation of the Union.

I acquired this 18 years ago in Natick, Massachusetts.

A nice addition to any Folk Art or Civil War collection.

Condition:

There is expected fading of the colors as well as toning and staining of the paper. In the lower right portion of the painting, there is a loss of paper where it has become brittle and broken away, viewable in photographs. The glass is intact. The frame is in good condition with a warm, mellow, patinated surface which includes many years of scuffs, scratches and wear. The frame retains its original brass hanging ring. A simple rough-cut single piece of wood serves as a backboard for the piece.
*Note: In photos, the horizontal mark in lower right corner: there is a natural imperfection in the glass which is casting a shadow on the paper. It is not a crack in the glass nor is it a mark on the paper.
