AJ Johnson flame-grain mahogany library desk with full standing winged griffins, circa 1890's. Late 19th century library desk features four huge standing winged griffins with fierce expressions and enormous carved wings, supporting a generously sized tabletop. Serpentine desk top includes wide relief carved border with griffins, deep wagon wheel carving at the edges, extended corners and a heavily carved and shaped skirt. Desk includes two drawers with quartersawn oak interiors and excellent carved pulls. Winged griffins rest on a serpentine bottom shelf over flattened bun feet and recessed casters. Original finish has been beautifully restored. Measures 31 inches high by 57 inches long, with a depth of 37 inches.
