Art Deco, German silver (.800) pocket watch holder and open face silver pocket watch, the holder made by Silversmith Hermann Behrnd, Dresden and the open face pocket watch made by Watchmaker Dürrstein & Company, Dresden & Glashütte, Germany, circa 1920s.
The Watch Holder Case: 55mm x 113mm desk watch holder. The 0.800% German silver watch holder comes in the form of small carriage clock with shaped silver hand above the rectilinear polished silver case with button to open the two halves of the casing to reveal a felt or velvet lined and fitted case to hold the entire pocket watch. The case rests on four silver ball feet and the base carries the German silver mark of the crescent moon to the left of the crown and quality of the silver, 0.800% with the combined HB mark of the Dresden silversmith Hermann Behrnd of 27 GrunerStrasse, and in business from c. 1881 into the 1930s. The Watch: This is a polished silver (no hallmarks on the watch), three leaf open face pocket watch, pendant wound and pendant set, with the covers marked with the case number 3372. I do not see a silver mark but this case does appear to be silver, perhaps made by the same silversmith who made the case. the white enameled dial has Arabic hours, closed minute track and steel Continental style Spade hands with the hour hand appearing to be in the English style and likely the watch holder and the watch were made in Germany specifically for the English market. The dial is unsigned. The movement is a damascened three-quarter nickel plate, jeweled movement with part of the barrel wheel exposed and the plates reveal the serial number of the movement, 466633 and the logo of a Castle marked Felsenberg, indicative of the watch maker Durrstein & Company, in business from 1874 until their closure in 1936. They were located at 27 Waisenhausstrasse in Dresden, as well as in Glashutte. the movement has a German made regulator marked in English and French initials for faster and slower. Condition: Overall the silver holder and case are in very fine condition with no major damage and quite beautiful aesthetically. The watch dial and movement are excellent and the movement is considered original to this casing and genuine.
