A set of Continental apothecary's bronze nesting weights, 19th. century. Not stamped or marked. Purchased here in Switzerland. Most probably a Nuremberg set.
The nested cup weights were designed to make the transport of weights, essential items in most commercial transactions, more convenient. The idea of nesting weights, which dates back to Roman times, was to increase the portability of weight sets by compacting an entire group of weights into a container. In the nested cup form, a series of weights shaped into cups are set one into the other, forming a stack which is stored within a house vessel.
Size : 4 cm. ( 1 37/64" ) tall, the top's diameter : 5 cm. ( 2" ).
Weight : 418 g. ( 14.74 ounces ).
Condition: very good - the latch grips firmly - acceptable signs of age. Has not been cleaned/polished!
