A somewhat rare , ingeniously made, Hermes ' lipstick' cigarette lighter. A very cleverly made gold plated, on brass, lighter. Made, I believe, by La Nationale in Geneva , Switzerland - still manufacturing , inter alia, lighters today for the world's top ranked retailers and now trading under the name of L. N. Industries. A wonderful piece of engineering. It has an ingenious mechanism with a circular thumb ring combined with a great design ( the thumb ring to be turned clockwise to ignite and anti clockwise to open the internal flint chamber ! ). Patented in France in 1950 by Jean Feuer, a Swiss citizen. For those who do not know the workings of the piece there is available on Youtube a very short video which shows how the mechanism works. This lighter gained a lot of great publicity due to its use by Marlene Dietrich in earlier days!
Size : 6.6 cm. ( 2 19/32" ) tall with a diameter of 2 cm. ( 0 25/32" ).
Weight : 55 g. ( 1.94 ounces ).
Condition: overall, good we believe ( we are not experts in this specialised field ). I do not know when it was last used - the wick is very dry. It has no flint inserted in the mechanism, which seems to be working well. The only tiny flaw is a little indentation to the metal near where the lid is ( see bottom photograph ). The digital camera industriously highlights it well but , in reality, it is quite unnoticeable.
