When first made and sold, this would have been an expensive luxury object. The cost of photographic equipment in the early 20th century made it prohibitively expensive and photography was largely the preserve of the upper middle and upper classes. Likewise, frames for photographs were also expensive things, being aimed at wealthy buyers.
It is a very handsome item.
