On offer for sale is a very early, dated 1789 needlework sampler. That makes this piece about 232 years of age. The condition is good for its age with some fading, discoloration and age marks. This is a nice size, approximate dimensions 8 1/4 inches by 26 3/4 inches including the frame and 7 1/4 inches by 25 3/4 inches of the visible sampler. Signed and dated in needlework (Elizabeth Watter Her sampler 1789). Just above the crowns and after the row of numbers on the right side is another reference to the date on this sampler, 1789. Comes in a much later frame which has some gesso loss. Please view all images as they form part of the description. Decorated with numbers and alphabet and various royal crowns of differing sizes. Young ladies of means were required to complete samplers such as this to put their needlework skills to the test, plus to show their status in society. I can't imagine anyone would be disappointed with this sampler, but as with all vintage pieces such as this you should not expect them to be perfect as they will show normal signs of age as described. Please note, all images were taken under glass, so there may be some reflection in some of the pictures.
