On offer for sale is vintage needlework sampler dated 1864. That makes this piece around 157 years of age. The condition is not perfect and may be described as poor condition overall as It has fading, discolorations, staining and the odd minor hole which are all just due to age, but there are two things that make this sampler interesting. The American civil war took place between 1861 and 1865, and this sampler is dated in needlework 1864, and it is signed in needlework by two sisters (Phillis Bailey aged 12 and Elizabeth Bailey aged 4). Can't recall seeing two sisters on the same sampler before which could suggest they both had a hand in this sampler. A very faded inscription below reads (Learning is the treasure and practice is the key). This is being sold unframed, and the approximate dimensions are 17 1/8 inches by 15 3/4 inches. The sampler is still attached to it's original wooden stretcher. The backing fabric is somewhat distressed with holes and there are traces of a paper backing which all looks to be original. There is a house at the bottom with birds and two hearts, along with alphabet and numbers at the top. This is an interesting piece of needlework which has a lot of character, and would benefit by being properly secured in an appropriate frame. Young ladies of means were required to complete samplers such as this to put their needlework skills to the test, plus to show their status in society. As with all vintage pieces such as this you should not expect them to be perfect and this is no exception, as they will show normal signs of age as described above, but please view all images as well as they form part of the description.
