On offer for sale is a very early English elm wood box dating to the late 17th/ early 18th Century. These boxes are often referred to as Bible Boxes, as they would have been a very revered item that would have housed the family bible back in the day. Approximate dimensions 22 3/4 inches long by 11 1/2 inches wide and 6 3/4 inches high. As you might expect for a piece of this age, the condition is not perfect. Any item which is several hundred years of age is bound to have some issues. This piece shows signs of age all over with some later repairs, discolorations, warped wood and old bug damage. There are some age gaps on the lid and a small repair to the front right corner, and there are some small bits of worn away wood here and there. The original old cotter pin hinges have long since gone and been replaced with a later type of old hinge. Original old lock. There are some later bracing strips of metal inside the lid. If you like very early primitive looking items with a lot of character, then you will not be disappointed with this piece, but please bear in mind that this is a very early piece and will show signs of age as described.
