On offer for sale is a beautiful quality needlework sampler dated 1833. It's in good original condition with just a couple of miniscule holes near the lower right corner, but they are hardly worth mentioning at all as they are so small and difficult to see. The colors and clarity are very good in this sampler. Approximate dimensions 14 1/8 inches by 15 3/8 inches including the frame and 12 1/2 inches by 13 3/4 inches of the visible sampler. Signed in needlework (Eliza Southgate Her Work 1833). Lots of interesting detail work in this sampler, with birds, plants, vases with plants, the tree of life with Adam and Eve, a very nice verse plus a very intricate border. This is a very appealing looking sampler. Somebody wrote some interesting information on the back of the frame which states that Eliza was born in 1823, which means she was just 10 years old when she completed her sampler. Also, it looks to have been framed back in 1966 and given as a gift to Prudy? The frame is in good condition and suits the sampler perfectly. Well to do young ladies back in the day were expected to learn quality needlework skills as part of their education, and completing a sampler like this was a way of showing that. I can't imagine anyone could be disappointed with this piece, but please bear in mind it is a vintage item which is about 185 years old, so it will show normal signs of aging.
