On offer for sale is a very intriguing and decorative box housing a compendium of card and board games. The box dates to circa 1890 and is made from solid oak with solid brass hardware. The box is in original condition and shows marks from usage, wear and discolortions, which all add up to make this a very characterful piece. The brass has not been polished as I think it looks better with it's original patina. Check out the interior of the lid, it's made up of a beautiful quality geometric inlaid wood design. Approximate dimensions 18 1/8 inches long by 12 inches wide and 7 1/4 inches high. This box didn't start life as a compendium of games, they must have been added later, but I could imagine this box was well used over the years, long before television came onto the scene, when games like this were a source of entertainment. Take a look at the image which shows the old airplanes on the back of the dominoes, looks like thirties to me. There are lots of different packs of playing cards and games. I even saw some round playing cards? Chess pieces, dominoes checkers, three billiard balls, three darts, a bag or marbles, tin of counters and more. This is a very heavy box with it's contents, just under 30 lbs. This is a great quality piece that is sure not to disappoint, but please bear in mind this is a vintage item and the box and contents with show normal signs of use and wear. This would be a great item to bring out at holiday times.
