Oh my goodness, what a perfectly unique piece of antique, 18th century, hand crafted jewellery!! C1770.
A very finely hand beaded collar necklace in a cleverly designed and executed infinity pattern of silvery white and black. These tiny 'micro' beads are fashioned from polished steel and facetted blackened cut steel respectively. Band width is approximately 1 inch. In virtually pristine condition with just a tiny (stable) edge damage of 2 beads loss. More or less imperceptible to the naked eye.
Looks to be cemented and stitched either end onto the bars of this beautiful embossed pinchbeck clasp. Again, in lovely antique condition and still that bright gold finish always found with the genuine pinchbeck items. A typical fancily embellished all over rococco design which has been pressed with nearly as much attention to detail given to the back of the clasp. The widest part of the reducing graduated style is about 1 3/4 inches.
There are 5 floral motif stanchions to each side and these are joined by a more recent spidery web, black elastic macrame connector. I would hazard a guess that this was copied from an original similar one. Can be taken right off for your own lacing or attached from either side .
The piece looks quite Gothic as is so could be lifted with a white (or coloured?) narrow ribbon for contrast. Neck size without the 1 3/4 inch extender is about 13 1/2 inches. Would still be comfy for up to about 16 inches.
I have worn this piece a few times and it has always been a head turner, not least when worn as a knee garter!! Lol! The right guy could also carry this off as a shirt necker à la pirate mode!
A really amazing item of fashion history and must go to the best new home!!
Thanks for looking, hope you love it!
