Blue Venetian Silver Deposit Murano Glass Pitcher Hand Blown Vintage

Elegant and stylish hand blown large glass pitcher with elaborate silver deposit decorations of a romantic colonial couple. It is a light teal blue color with an applied handle and open pontil on the bottom. There are three large Venetian scenes with a well dressed colonial couple against backgrounds of Venetian landscapes. There are elaborate silver deposit borders along the top and bottom. The handle and bottom foot are entirely covered with silver deposit. The pour spout is very pinched so no ice cubes will splash into your glasses when pouring. It is unsigned but typical of Venetian Murano glass of C.1920.

Height - 10".
Width including handle - 10".

Condition: It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks but the silver deposit has darkened over the years and there are a few spots of uneven patina on the top surface of the bottom foot. The silver deposit designs are not worn. This has probably been a shelf piece over the years.

Silver overlay glass has a design in silver "electroplated" onto the glass using one of several electrolytic techniques. Like all silver, the design tarnishes and becomes black in time.

From Kovels:
"Silver deposit glass was first made during the late nineteenth century. Solid sterling silver is applied to the glass by a chemical method so that a cutout design of silver metal appears against a clear or colored glass. The technique was used to make pieces in the Art Nouveau style that were popular from the 1890s to about 1920. It is not the same as silver overlay, which is thin designs of sheet metal applied over glass or ceramics."
