This glorious watch fob is a wonderful, rare and highly collectable Georgian creation. It oozes the splendour of the fine workmanship of the Georgian era of around 1830. It is hand crafted in 15 karat gold, which has been carefully tested and is most certainly of English origin. Shaped as a drinking or a powder horn with a lid it would have been used by a wealthy and, possibly extravagantly flamboyant gentleman as a fob on his pocket watch chain - in reference to his love of history and hunting ! The tradition of a horn used as a drinking vessel goes back to the 5th century BC. They were used in marriage ceremonies, warrior burials and brotherhood ceremonies. Their use spread from the classical antiquity regions of Greece and Scythia ( Central Asia and Eastern Europe ) as well as the Roman Empire to Central Europe. They are associated with Vikings, Anglo-Saxons Germanic people and the Celts. They were made in actual horn, richly decorated metal or even ceramic. This watch fob is a beautiful and luxurious nod to a long and rich warrior history. It is designed as a horn suspended from two original, smooth, snake like chains. The lid of the horn is not made to open. Atop sits a moving chain slide. The main body of the horn as well as the chain and the slide are made in glorious rose gold with rich yellow gold accents of the floral decorations. The horn measures 1.44 by 0.38 inches, the slide 0.53 by 0.38 inches. The whole piece is 4 inches long, weighs 7.3 grams and is in excellent antique condition.

We love ..... the extravagance and opulence of this fob . We think the original Georgian owner of this beautiful piece was an interesting and exuberant persona. Perhaps this fob was a treasured reminder of his life's adventures, his coming of age, his Grand Tour through Europe....
