The Victorian jewellers excelled at making wonderfully intricate jewellery. This book chain necklace is a fine example of their skills and craft.
Book chain necklaces, called so as the links were shaped ( more or less ) like books were usually made in silver and it is lovely to find one made in solid gold !
This one, hand crafted in Victorian England around 1880 is very unusual as it is bi-colour. It features alternating 9 carat rose gold links and 15 carat yellow gold ones creating a stunning effect. The 15 carat yellow links are flat and lozenge shaped while the rose gold 9 carat ones are raised. There is a riot of colours, textures and decorations, so abundant and rich in design. It can be worn as a necklace with a fastening to the back or you can wear the fab, large bolt clasp at the front and hang your favourite locket or charms on it.
The necklace is not hallmarked and we carefully tested it for you. I need to mention that there is a previous testing mark on ( thankfully ) the back of one of each of the links which was regretfully not so carefully done, resulting in some scratch marks and the discolouration of that area due to using the testing acid. Luckily it can't be seen at all when worn. There is also an old repair on one of the links, also at the back, solid and stable - and again, not visible when worn and we show you both in our photos. Otherwise the necklace is in great condition and the two minor faults mentioned are reflected in the price of the piece.
The necklace is 17 inches long including the clasp and bolt ring and weighs 19 grams. The lozenge shaped yellow gold links measure 0.53 by 0.45 inches while the rounded rose gold ones 0.41 by 0.39 inches. Respectively they are set off 1.4mm and 4.3 in height.

We love ...... the fabulous look of this gold necklace with it's fantastic workmanship and detail. The richness and romance of the Victorian era that we still so admire one hundred and forty years after it was made is still en vogue ......
