Our oh, so romantic Victorian ancestors were fascinated by the stars. They were a symbol of the guiding light: ethereal, mysterious and out of reach yet full of the promise and hope of the unknown. This sentiment made the stars into the hot objects of desire. And what's a ( Victorian ) girl to do when she can't have the star from the sky ? She gets it made in sparkling, shimmering diamonds, bursting with the light of the precious gems, that's what !!
This fabulous piece looks like more like a pendant but it hides a secret - the front opens up to reveal a locket. It is large, bold and sleek, designed to deliver it's starry punch in the stylishly simple way. The smooth surface of the rich, buttery yellow gold propels this diamond starburst into focus beautifully !
Made in England around 1870 in 18 carat gold the locket is not hallmarked and we tested the gold content for you. A 9 carat hallmarked bale has been put atop. There used to be a brooch attachment at the back that has been removed to allow it to sit lovely and low when worn as a pendant - an improvement in our eyes ! Please note that the chain featured in our photos is not included in this listing but we will be happy to help you find a suitable chain for it. You literally feel the quality when you have this locket in your hand, it weighs whooping 27.1 grams ! The locket is 1.7 inches long ( 2.04 inches with the bale ), 1.48 inches wide and is 0.46 inches in thickness. The back is lovely and flat and it looks fab when worn. The raised star measures 1.06 by 0.79 inches. There is a fine pattern of dark blue enamel further accentuating the star, in reference to the beauty of the night sky. The 8-sided star features a lovely old mine cut diamond estimated to weigh 0.4 carat surrounded by bright and chunky rose cut diamonds. The total diamond weight is estimated to be 0.72 carats.
We love.......to wish upon a star and we love the beautiful unknown....We are in love with this fabulous locket for it's sentiment expressed so elegantly. Perhaps you have a secret wish ..... wish it like the Victorians :)
