The beautiful amethyst signified many things throughout the history. From a gemstone of spirituality and the talismanic protection in the ancient times and Middle Ages, the sign of wealth and status to the piety and religious humility - hence the Pope's and Bishop's rings feature huge amethysts. The amethyst has never fallen out of favour and the fascination with this gem continues. From the ancient times through to the Georgian period the lustrous, paler amethyst was favoured and this is such an example of the highly valued gem set into a cross.
Made in England, around 1800 in 9 carat mellow, yellow gold this piece is not hallmarked so we carefully tested it for the gold content. It's four arms are fashioned of oval faceted amethysts, foil set in wonderful pinched and high domed closed back settings to show the amethysts in their sparkling glory, while the centre features a round amethyst. All the stones are beautifully matched for colour and cut with great care for detail. The centre stone measures 11 mm in diameter, the top and sides are 12.5 mm long and the bottom slightly longer at 13 mm. This gives the cross it's wonderful proportions. The are four twisted wire prongs decorating the spaces between the amethysts. Overall the pendant is 1.8 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. It has a gold bale for hanging off a chain or a silk rope and a metal pin if you would prefer to use it as a brooch. Please note that the chain in our photos is not included in this listing. The cross and all the amethysts are in wonderful condition.

We love ...... the ethereal beauty of the wonderful amethysts in this fabulous cross. Wear it high at the neck as a Georgian lady would or on a longer chain for a more contemporary look. Either way you will wear this gorgeous piece of history beautifully......
