Blue zircons are one of these magical gems that cast a spell on you - once you fall in love there is no going back!
You can see why; they look like the twinkling, shimmering blue diamonds, drawing your eye into the irresistible depths of their colour. The old zircons , like the ones in this splendid pendant necklace were cut just like old mine cut diamonds, with high tables and fewer facets than the modern cut stones. They are infinitely more attractive in the old cut, which takes advantage of their double refractivity and high dispersion in a clever way to enhance all that sparkle !
Zircons are mined mainly in Burma, Sri Lanka and Cambodia and occur in the shades of green, red, yellow, orange, reddish-brown, and blue. Most of them are heated gently to produce the blue colour or colourless tones and this practice has been used for hundreds of years, ever since zircon was used in jewellery. The more intense the colour and larger the stone, the more valuable they are. Due to their chemical composition zircons help determine the Earth's age to 4.6 billion years! Perhaps that is why their beauty is so magnetic and they seems to possess mystical powers. They have long been believed to bring the wearer prosperity, honour, wisdom and aid sleep. They are a December Birthstone.
This necklace contains two large, sparkly and intense blue zircon gemstones. The top stone measures 9.4 mm diameter and the bottom one 10.2 mm diameter. Respectively, they are estimated to weigh 3.48 and 4.79 carats. The bottom stone has a very small internal flaw at the reverse and a couple of minute scratches to the culet ( the bottom point ), while the top one is free of any inclusions. Both have a couple of tiny and totally insignificant areas of rubbing to the facets of the table. These are not visible unless you use very strong magnification - we really do like to point out any tiny little flaw which you will never see :). Zircons are relatively soft compared to diamonds and sapphires with a hardness of 7.5 on Mohs scale, and they are better suited to necklaces and earrings, as then receive a minimal amount of rubbing and can survive for many decades in excellent condition, just like this beauty! They are set in gorgeous, intricate coronet settings made in buttery yellow 15 carat gold and platinum detail ( tested ). The fine work is typical of the Edwardian period in England. Despite the stone's chunky cut they lie lovely and flat against your chest. Please take a look at our photos how gorgeous this necklace looks; a powerful pop of colour against your skin. You can wear it alone or framed by other chains and necklaces and get all artistic and change the look to your heart's content. The necklace is 18.5 inches long ( this can be shortened to your liking by taking some links off ), features a lovely barrel clasp and weighs 5.5 grams. The gem studied part measures 1.31 by 0.41 inches.
We love ......the divine mystic turquoise -like blue zircons sparkling away as if the sun is reflecting off the crystal clear waters of the ocean. Yep, we love all that in a necklace :)
