Victorians - the great romantics adored their symbolic jewellery, from flowers to colours to gems ....they all represented something.....said something..... Swallows symbolized the desire for your loved one to return home safely, faithfully, soon. This lovely locket portrays a sweet swallow in flight, set with seven lucky split natural pearls and two turquoises - for forget me not flowers. It is hallmarked 9 ct Back and Front and Silver Setting. This means that the whole of front and back of this locket are made from a sheet of solid 9 carat gold ( not plated and not rolled, but solid gold ) which allowed for an application of heavy engraving. The parts that were subject to frequent opening and closing, namely the frames and the hinge are made of gold plated base metal. This allowed the structure to be stronger, as the gold is a soft metal and hence stay in great condition for years and years. This wonderful locket is in great condition, gently snaps closed and stays that way. Back and front lockets were very popular around the turn of the century and beyond. The locket is 1.4 by 1.0 inches, including the top and the bale. it weighs 6.9 grams. The frames inside are intact with with black fabric, which appears to be silk behind the glass inserts. The locket is in a lovely condition.
We love what this locket says so wonderfully.....Forget-Me-Not and safe return home.....
