We are excited to present to you this absolutely fabulous rose cut diamond cluster ring dating from around 1780.
The ring is not hallmarked so we carefully acid tested it and it is 18 carat gold. It weighs 2 grams and is a size US 7 3/8 and UK size O 1/2 at the moment and possible to size up or down by a good jeweller. The ring shank is ridged all the way around and splits gracefully to hold the rose diamond cluster, which measures 0.44 inches in the diameter. The width inclusive of the split shoulders and their decoration is 0.74 inches.
It is crafted in the Georgian Era Europe, most likely Italy. The diamonds are set in a closed back setting topped in silver. The diamonds are foil set, a technique of the times to enhance the fire and sparkle of the diamonds. It was replaced around 1840 by cutting the setting out from underneath the gems to let the light do the foil's work. The ring is in excellent condition, the foiling intact and the central stone substantial, measuring 5.6 mm in diameter and lovely and chunky at the top.
It is a classical beauty, understated and elegant in the simplicity of it's form yet so special……it draws the eye and makes you wonder about it's history. If only it could talk………
The ring is made of lovely yellow gold and all the gems are set in pinched rubover settings. The four original natural half pearls are lightly grey, catching the light with their silver sheen. There are seven chunky little rose cut diamonds foil-set between the pearls, providing the contrast and a gentle twinkle. It all looks like tears and little stars bathed in moonlight. Now, if you take a look at the picture of a street in Camberwell in around 1830's , it is called Camberwell Grove, you can just imagine a young woman wearing this ring and walking along this street remembering Elizabeth…….
