These late Victorian gold cufflinks are what you would imagine Mr Banks wearing at his wrists when he waved his children and Mary Poppins goodbye on his way to work…….dressed in a crisp, starched white shirt and his smart black coat and his bowler hat…..These were the sort of a thing a modern working man around the turn of the century would wear for work; elegant, sleek and understated yet saying…...I'm a man of position.
Our cufflinks are fully hallmarked, made in Birmingham, England in 1897. They are made in 9 carat rose gold and were originally fire gilded. That technique was very widely used in the Victorian jewellery and afforded the pieces a rich, buttery yellow gold finish. With wear, some of the gilding eventually comes of, blending it with the colour of the gold underneath, usually in a rose pinky hue. It gives the pieces this wonderfully attractive rich antique patina. This can be especially appreciated here as the chased pattern on the front of the cufflinks shows it clearly and looks nearly like a two tone gold.
They are in very good antique condition and have a trace of an old solder repair at the back where the chain is soldered to the main body of the cufflinks, clearly visible on our photos.
Maybe these lovely cufflinks would be a spoonful of sugar as you set off to work on a Monday morning?
