It is our absolute pleasure to present to you this wonderful, and rare, 18th century, 18 carat gold, Gryllos cameo ring.
Our neoclassical Gryllos cameo dates from circa 1700 and was set some years later, around 1780, into this elegantly simple 15 carat yellow gold, smooth to the touch, mount. The ring is not hallmarked, consistent with it's age, so we carefully acid tested it. It is a US size 5 7/8, UK L 1/2 and cannot be re-sized as the ring contains it's original inner plate ( you will find the details in our photographs ). It weighs 3 grams. The cameo measures 11.6 x 8.8, the face of the ring 12.2 x 19.9 mm. This superb quality ring is in great antique condition. There is a tiniest, speckle sized shallow dent on one side of the shank and a minuscule nick on the back/underside of the band. Again, you can inspect these under great magnification in our photos. They are not significant in any way and do not detract from the ring.
This understated mount effectively offsets our Gryllos cameo to perfection. The Gryllos motif was featured in jewellery from the ancient times. Revered in the middle ages the subject continued to fascinate the neoclassic artists too. It has always been an embodiment of the impossible and mysterious, a fusion of man and beast…….the symbol of a man's desire, that became a prisoner of the beast………an insight into the human psyche……..Ours is a four headed image of a youth, a bearded man, a satyr and a ram………. Anyone with a passion for a mystery?
