It is an absolute pleasure to present to you this wonderful and rare Georgian diamond ring.
Its design is so inspiring and different to the most popular Georgian set up of a larger stone, which was either paste, diamond or a coloured gem in the centre and two or four diamonds on the sides. Here we have four matching Peruzzi cut diamonds taking the centre stage with two smaller ones on the shoulders of the ring. Vincent Peruzzi, an Italian diamond cutter introduced this cut of diamonds in 1681 as an improvement on an earlier Mazarin cut, increasing the number of facets for more fire and brilliance.
The back of the ring and the shank are traditional of the times. The ribbed underside of it and the scrolled tulip shoulders are typical of the mid 18th century. The ring is beautifully made in 18 carat gold ( acid tested ) with silver settings for the diamonds. It is in absolutely wonderful condition so that you can admire the brilliant workmanship of a Georgian jewellery master. It had been looked after extremely well in its life so luckily we have no faults to report to you. The ring is size US 5 7/8 and UK L1/2 and although we could carefully size it somewhat we won't be able to achieve a significant change of the size without compromising its integrity. If you would need to get the size altered please get in touch with us.
The four-diamond section of the ring measures 7.5 by 6.6 mm. The width across the finger with the side diamonds is 15mm. It is tricky to estimate accurately the weight of the diamonds as they are in a closed back setting so we can't measure their depth. The edges of the diamonds are covered by the setting also. The four main stones measure 2.55 x 2.67 mm, 2.65 x 2.53 mm, 3.06 x 3.43 mm and 2.81 x 3.48 mm. We estimate the total weight of the diamonds very conservatively to be a minimum of 1 carat, and it is possible that the ring contains a lot more in diamond weight.
The shape and cut of the diamonds in the ring as well as the idea of having the four of them in this pattern at the centre was so stunningly brilliant and ahead of the times. This look is fabulously contemporary in styling. It is like a forward thought 250 years ago shining in a ring. Anyone for brilliant…. ?
