I bet if this ring were to taste anything close to what it looks like, it would be delicious! This is a mid Victorian mourning ring, made circa 1860 in England. Hand made in 18 carat yellow gold (tested), 6 juicy half natural pearls (approx 3.65 mm diameter) are set in the grape motif along with a little green emerald in the centre and a ruby to accentuate the grape vine. The pearls match perfectly and are in such wonderful condition - this ring was clearly very well looked after. The ruby and emerald show faint signs of wear, naturally. Stunningly crafted grape vine motif shoulders encase the grape, finishing it off gracefully. On the underside of the bezel is a closed locket with the hair of the loved one that now rests.
The grape was chosen for a specific reason, not just to look pretty – this does not surprise me as the Victorians were a very sentimental people and loved their hidden meanings. Grapes symbolise Christ, victory over death and the joys of heaven that are to come… A faithful follower and their loving beliefs for the future of their deceased loved one perhaps? How sweet.
This fine ring is a US size 5 3/4 (UK size L) and measures 17.70 mm across (shoulder to shoulder) and 12.70 mm up the finger. It can easily be made smaller or larger by a skilled jeweller. It weighs 2.4g. It is in fantastic condition with no signs of damage, repair or previous sizing. Need i say more...
Let me add that pearls are rather delicate so to preserve them please be sure not to spray perfume or hairspray when you are wearing it.
