A superb early Victorian sentimental slider necklace made in England around 1850. It beholds a darling lovers knot studded with bright blue turquoise stones - a very popular stone at this time symbolising 'remember me by' as it shares the colour of the forget me not flower. There is also a little, crystal glass topped locket with plaited brunette hair on the back of the knot. There are two possibilities… A)... this was a bespoke piece made for a loved up gentleman to give to his bride on their wedding day (something new and blue, the never ending love theme, the loving lock of his hair). Or B)… to give to his love to remember him by for whilst he has to go away. For what reason we will never know. The lovers knot and sentimental hair lock became popular themes in jewellery (as well as many others) after the marriage of Queen Victoria to Price Albert.. their love and devotion for each other strong and never-ending. Just like the lovers knot… :)
The whole necklace is made of 18 carat gold, which is not hallmarked but has been acid tested. It had also been gilded which has remained well, this is rather rare as it often rubs off over time. The chasing is stunning as are the turquoise stones and hollow gold drops. The stones measures on average 4.50 x 3.40 mm and are in perfect condition. They have been matched well too. The woven snake like chain is an example of outstanding craftsmanship. It is wonderfully fine and on one side of the turquoise studded knot the chain slides through to adjust the size of the necklace - how fantastic!
When the necklace is at its longest, the pendant drop measures 2.19 x 0.92 inches and this includes the two chased drops. It sits 0.55 inches off the chest (from a side view). At full length the chains measures 16 inches long and so 18 inches in total with the turquoise knot. It can be made smaller, by a couple of inches or so, so with the turquoise knot it is about 16 inches. I have shown both options when worn in my photos. The sweet clasp is in perfect working order. The necklace is in overall very good antique condition with just a dark mark on one of the drops, on the bottom right hand corner of the front of the knot and one on the back (all photographed.) Not very noticeable when worn. The knot, chasing, chain and locket are in perfect condition. Also the you may be wondering if when you have set the length of the necklace whether it stays without sliding slide, and yes it keeps rather well! It may slide a bit you may find, naturally, but not a lot and you can simply re-adjust it back. The necklace weighs 10.2 grams altogether.
A beautiful piece, perfect for many occasions but especially for a bride or bridal gift …it is something old, blue AND bursting with the theme of love. Its just perfect.
